PROJECT PROPOSAL
“Be the Match”

1.
Summary
Be the Match is a
national organization whose main goal is to find donors for patients who suffer
from various forms of Leukemia and other life threating diseases. I propose a project that allows testing by a
simple swab of both cheek, for employees of premier pediatrics, and myself and
for the duration of a month, parents with their children’s well child check; along
with a dedicated day for just testing. With this project we want to expand the
search for viable bone marrow donors to save lives of those nationwide
Be
the Match project would count towards my Southern Utah University Edge Project.
The Edge Project is a experiential learning tool that every SUU student is
required to do. The goal is to get students involved in the community and to
help better Cedar City as a whole. With this project I do not foresee any
expenses. Should any arise, funds are available to students who apply for Edge
Grants, the amounts differs between project caliber and amount of people
involved.
We’ve
asked Premier Pediatrics locations in Hurricane and Cedar City to participate
publicly of our event as well as allowing us to use the facilities on day where
there is not a regular clinic day scheduled. This would allow us to utilize an
organized, and well known space to host our specimen collection. Once
collected, the specimens will be sent for testing at the regional office in
Salt Lake City. If a donor match is found they will be notified by the office
in question on further steps of donation.

Introduction
As stated in my summary,
I am a student at Southern Utah University who wants to utilize this
opportunity for my EDGE Project. It would further my experience with patient
care in the healthcare field.
Doing
this project in the Clinic spaces would allow certain public attention that our clinics do not normally receive. It
would show to our community that we have multiple interest in support of those
in need. I have already received
interest from Nursing students at Southern Utah University who want to join our
cause and help us achieve our goals. With that resource available to us it
allows a unique and board opportunity to get the cause out in the community in
Cedar City and St. George. We have multiple patients as well as employees in
our clinics who have been affected by this awful disease. With the support from
those individuals I believe our reason and cause to be strong.
Specifics
of the drive are as follows; We would offer a simple cheek swap for any parent
who meets certain criteria that allows them to be a viable candidate for
donation. This portion would last an entire month. In that month we would host
a special donation day where employees and other community members from the
hospitals and other clinics can come to donate. This would be applicable to
both clinic locations.

Needs/Problems
Some issues that are being accounted for:
- People not volunteering hours
to assist.
- It can be avoided by
recruiting the rural health scholars at both universities for service
hours. As well as premier pediatric employees.
- Cost Issues:
- Funds from the EDGE center
could accommodate any cost that arises.
- The Time frame
- I believe that we have plenty
of time to put together this drive. Especially with the amount of support
at the clinic. The entire project, including pre planning, will span from
the current date (9/12/16) to November 30th.
4.
Goals/Objectives
• To spread awareness of Leukemia and other
diseases needing bone marrow transplants in everyday lives.
• To find viable donors
for patients in need of bone marrow nationwide
• To boast company morale
with the hopes to continue this annually
- Receive a minimum of 500 cheek
swabs total.
5.
Procedures/Scope of Work
The test to see if someone is a viable candidate is a simple cheek swab
on both sides . More details will come with the information provided by the
national office.
